V A R A Ž D I N
is a city 81 kilometers north of the Croatian capital, Zagreb. Nestled in a valley, Varaždin is renowned for its wonderful Baroque buildings that survive from the prosperity it enjoyed during years as the Croatian capital from 1756 to 1776. Top artisans and builders gravitated to the town at this time and as a result there is still a beautiful Town Square in which to enjoy a coffee or beer, a picturesque Castle and gardens, several churches, a spectacularly decorated Cathedral and a peaceful, leafy park. Gastronomically you are also in for a treat. There are many wonderful bakeries (try delicious finger-shaped bread, klipici) and several excellent restaurants. The sights, smells and sounds of the colourful daily market are also definitely not to be missed!
